The Legacy for Learning Society
Florida International University’s founders had a bold and prescient vision when they established the institution in 1965. In 1972, FIU opened its doors to the largest first-day enrollment in the history of American higher education, a resounding sign of the need for a public university in Miami. FIU’s overriding commitment to our community has continued over the decades as it has rapidly evolved to become a top-tier institution providing high-quality teaching, state-of-the-art research and creative activity, and collaborative engagement with our local and global communities.
Private philanthropy has been a vital source of support to sustain and strengthen the University—and the Legacy for Learning Society plays an important role enhancing FIU’s mission. The society includes nearly 200 alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and friends who have made planned gifts to create a legacy and benefit the University. Every member has selected a vehicle that best fits their needs to make their gifts to the FIU Foundation, including charitable bequests, remainder trusts, gift annuities, and life insurance proceeds.
Since the Foundation received its first donation in 1970, legacy gifts have been a key element of the University’s financial growth and stability. Academic units, buildings, and scholarships bear the names of donors who created planned gifts to elevate the FIU community. The $750 million Next Horizon campaign is now powering the University’s next phase of progress by focusing on the pillars of student success and research excellence, which will benefit our community, state, nation, and the world.
The FIU Foundation sincerely thanks all society members for supporting FIU. These individuals know that an investment of their legacies in the University is far reaching, with an impact for generations to come. We invite you to follow their generous lead by joining them in the Legacy for Learning Society. Together, we will enable FIU to reach the Next Horizon.
