Paving the Way: The FIU Alumni Association's Own Gives Back

Current president of the Florida International University (FIU) Alumni Association and member of the Association's Board of Directors since 2005, Joaquin "Jack" F. Gonzalez, '98 understands the importance of leading by example. A member of the President's Council and a lifetime member of the Alumni Association, Gonzalez recently pledged a planned gift of $200,000 to the University. Funds will provide unrestricted support for both the Alumni Association and University Advancement.

This unique gift, a universal life insurance policy that names the University as the sole beneficiary and owner, is the largest of its kind in the history of FIU. The donation will provide a flexible source of funding to advance the Alumni Association's mission, supporting student scholarships and outreach programs. The gift will also advance the University's external fundraising efforts, with the intention of inspiring fellow members of the FIU community to follow Jack's lead.

Gonzalez is a 1997 graduate of FIU who received a bachelor's degree in Management and International Business from the College of Business Administration. He is currently the vice president of CBIZ Retirement Consulting, Inc. Gonzalez chose to pledge a life insurance policy because "at my current stage of life, this is the best way to give the most," he says.

Persuaded to join the Alumni Association by his friend and former president, Will Trueba, Gonzalez wanted to support the University's fundraising campaign and initiatives through his planned gift. "Actions speak louder than words," he says. Gonzalez understands the importance of planned giving and encourages others to consider it as an alternative to outright gifts. He aims to set a philanthropic precedent for others to replicate. "I need to set an example as a leader. I wanted to motivate others. FIU is my alma mater, so what better way to give back."

Bill Draughon, FIU Alumni Association Executive Director, considers Jack as not only an enthusiastic supporter of FIU but also an inspiration to many: "Jack is a prime example of one who has realized the importance of giving back. As an involved member of the Panther community, Jack embodies the true spirit of FIU and confirms it with his generous support of the University."
